Carrying on the NY theme comes the latest offering from Joni Sternbach. Something between the composition and immortal stares captured in her portraits from the Surfland collection made it a highlight of Issue 2. The tintype technique she uses meant that each picture was made on location with a portable dark box in a labour intensive manner little changed since its invention in the 1850's. Creating images in this handmade way means that small idiosyncrasies are translated into each image giving them character beyond the subject matter, which by itself is arresting enough.

The Surfland series will sit among seventy photographs from four major bodies of Joni’s work in her new exhibition VAST celebrating the ocean, sky and desert. The survey exhibition takes advantage of a wide array of media including 2 short videos, adding to the reference of vastness of Joni’s work.

The exhibition is curated by Carol McCusker, PhD, Curator of Photography and opens November 21, 2017 - April 24, 2018 at the Harn Museum of Art.

We couldn't recommend highly enough.
