The 2017 Rebel Sessions went down in conditions many were calling the most difficult they'd ever experienced. Competitors were greeted by 20ft plus clean surf at the infamous Dungeons, South Africa on Monday 23rd. In an epic 7 hour marathon, a field of local and international surfers were judged not in traditional heats but through photos and video collected on the day which are now being reviewed by a panel of 3 judges to divide the R100k into 4 categories; Dedication: Waterman award, Inspiration: Biggest Paddle Wave, Motivation: Rookie, Consequences: Worst Wipe Out. Standouts on the day included Mike Bromley, Mike Schelbach, Tommy Kruger and Odd Perssons.

The Rebel Sessions event honors the hard charging heritage of the South African Big Wave community. In keeping with the session's motto “by the locals for the locals”, this year's event partnered with the Cape Town NSRI as they celebrate 50 years of saving lives and Waves-For-Change, a surf therapy group helping youth cope with stress and trauma one wave at a time.

A great opener to the Big Wave season that is currently kicking off across the ocean in Hawaii. Stay tuned for a winner.
