Backwash is a motley crew of rogues and misfits brought together with the common desire to give something back to surfing culture. From different corners of the British Isles, Matt and Noah in Ireland, Bowden in Cornwall, McClean in the north east and my current incarceration in London we map many corners. Recently, we spent a week on the north coast of Scotland on an average chart, planning and scheming what Backwash is already and what it might become. Our broad conclusions are twofold.

Firstly, we’ll keep planting one tree for every issue sold. We’ve got almost zero Issue Ones left, that’s 1500 native in the Irish soil. This is the most tangible thing about the magazine, a circular economy payback for every one you buy. Since we came up with this idea many others from the industry are doing the same. This is great.

Secondly, we made a decision to take a slice of the entity called Backwash and divide it for community ownership, so our contributors are invested in the future of our culture. In the absence of ready cash to pay our wide pool of talented contributors, we’ll give you the chance to own a small part. The magazine and its digital presence therefore becomes truly for and part of the community.

Issue Three will focus on our home, the United Kingdom. It is now open for contribution. We invite and would welcome yours.
